Meet the Newly Illumined

September 1, 2024

‍Calvin “Basil” Chung Kai Ho was welcomed into the Orthodox Church through the Sacrament of Holy Chrismation on Sunday, June 23, 2024. His sponsor is Rajai Akkawi. Here, we further illumine Calvin’s journey to Orthodoxy and invite our readers to get to know him better!

What brought you to Orthodoxy and the Resurrection parish?
In 2022, I went on a trip to some of the most significant places of Christianity – Turkey, Lebanon, Greece, Cyprus, and Rome. And the most transformative experience was my visit to the Stravourouni Monastery in Cyprus. It was an hour-long encounter with an Orthodox monk named Macarios that changed my perspective on the Eastern Church and led me on a journey to the Orthodox faith.

Who/what inspired you to get involved in the parish?
Chris, Nikki, Bia, Dora, & Carleen welcomed us when we were new to Resurrection. Soon we got to meet more people and their stories and their hospitality helped us feel at home and we wanted to keep growing in this faith community. The greeters and the hospitality team created an environment of warmth and smiles, which made us feel at home. Fr. Niko and Dn. Justin offered invaluable spiritual mentorship and guidance in our journey. My sponsor, Rajai offered prayers and encouragement to me during my preparation for chrismation.

Which of our ministries do you enjoy participating in?
My two children, Gideon (13) and Carina (11) developed friendships with other children (and I with other parents) through the activities organized by the homeschooling parents, and later through Sunday School, GOYA and JOY. My niece from Hong Kong, together with my children, were deeply inspired by their experience serving at the Greek Festival last year.

Do you have a favorite Saint?
I was profoundly moved when I visited Cappadocia in 2022. It was the first time I entered into the sacred spaces occupied by ancient monastics and hermits. St Basil helped organize the monastic community there, and I felt a deep connection with him ever since I returned to the States.

What’s your favorite bible verse?
Hebrew 12:1, "since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses” helped me appreciate all the saints who have been praying for us in our journey toward God. I cherish the icons of the saints and thank God for their prayers and their examples.

On a Personal Note
I have background as an engineer (software and biotech), and was a pastor at a Protestant Church in Oakland for seven years. We founded Compassion Pet Hospice about nine years ago, where my wife is working as a house-call veterinarian to provide hospice care to animals and their families. I am the business manager of the practice and also work part-time as a software consultant. I was born in Hong Kong and moved to the U.S. when I was 16. My kids can speak fluent Cantonese and that’s how we communicate at home. I love mountain biking, swimming, and playing tennis with my children. I also like to read history and travel books.
